Object Permanence & Doom Piles

In the ADHD community, “object permanence” describes the difficulty of remembering things exist when they aren’t visually present. (It’s distinct from the developmental milestone in infants — same name, different meaning.) Most brains hold a quiet background awareness — “I have apples in the fridge” — without effort. ADHD brains often drop that information the moment the fridge door closes.

You buy a bag of spinach, put it in the crisper drawer, and “discover” it three weeks later as green slime because you couldn’t see it.

Your desk has seventeen piles of “important” papers, three half-empty water bottles, and items that have been there so long they’ve become invisible furniture.

Doom Piles

Didn’t Organize, Only Moved.” Piles of random items left out on surfaces — because putting them away in a drawer means you’ll forget you own them. The pile is a memory strategy, even if it doesn’t look like one.

Relationship drift

Forgetting to contact friends or family simply because they aren’t physically in front of you. You genuinely love them — but they don’t “exist” in mind when out of sight, and then guilt makes reaching out even harder.

Context-dependent memory

Memories tied to specific places or sensory triggers. You see your neighbor at the grocery store and have no idea who they are — until you picture them standing in their own driveway.

  • Piles everywhere, because putting things away means forgetting them
  • Food going bad because you couldn’t see it
  • Buying scissors when you already own three pairs somewhere
  • Forgetting to text friends back for weeks because they’re not in front of you

It can look like not valuing your things or your people. It isn’t. The brain simply has limited capacity to track what it can’t see, and it drops that information automatically — not by choice. The fix isn’t trying to remember harder; it’s making things visible.
